John Coltrane – A Love Supreme

Today I reviewed A Love Supreme by John Coltrane, an incredible album filled with the work of a master. With it’s interesting tone, and surprising swing towards the later half of the record, A Love Supreme continuous to have a legacy in jazz music that has affected people for decades.

A Love Supreme; an incredible album filled with the work of a master.

Originally recorded by the composer and saxophonist John Coltrane on the 9th of December 1964 at the well renowned Van Gelder Studio, the masterpiece suite that is A Love Supreme was recorded in one session.

The quartet that played this magnificent record was of course first of all Coltrane, on the tenor saxophone, pianist McCoy Tyner as well as Elvin Jones, the quartets stunning drummer. When it came to it’s first release, by Impulse! Records in January 1965, it soon became one of his best selling albums. Some people argue that this four part suite was his masterpiece.

Starting off with a terrifying gong that starts off the album perfectly, with a sharp surprise, that is sure to get you hooked! With it’s smooth tones following afterwards with John‘s tenor saxophone sounding like it’s hasn’t been composed, it is just merely a spontaneous free piece. This highlights the incredible work of Coltrane.

With a lasting impact on the jazz community, Coltrane‘s four part suite A Love Supreme is a classic, that was incredible to review. It is a dream come true to have this in a record format, which was bought for me at Rollercoaster Records in Kilkenny.
