John Wright – Canadian punk drummer and singer

For those who don’t know John, he grew up in a musical home, with his mother a piano teacher and John playing drums in his school’s jazz band. When his brother Rob and him went to see D.O.A. in UVic, they were inspired to start their own band.

Nomeansno started off as a band in their parents basement, releasing their debut album “Mama” in D.I.Y. packaging at 500 copies. Soon after this they went on to be signed to the infamous record label Alternative Tentacles, based in San Francisco, California, founded by Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys and East Bay Ray of Dead Kennedys. It was then that they began to release more music and add a new member, Andy Kerr, who played the guitar.

From then on, Nomeansno became the band we know of it today, with many albums with many incarnations of it, including the duo of John and Rob, and with Tom Holliston. As well as playing with Nomeansno, John and Rob also formed The Hanson Brothers and collaborated with Dead Bob.

In recent years, John has collaborated with Compressorhead, a literal robot band, becoming their singer, as well as starting his own group. Dead Bob, which was originally a solo project of new music and Nomeansno songs, became a full band, currently touring (and coming to Ireland! – see below!). Dead Bob now have two albums out, “Life Like” – a predominantly solo album, and “Nothing Changes Everything”, marking the beginning of the full band’s sound.

It was great to be able to discuss with John his extensive and influencial career, as a Nomeansno fan and a music fan.
