4 suites in one record!

Yes’s ‘Tales From Topographic Oceans’ is a record that is relatively new to me, as the first time I heard it was when my father bought me the record. From the first time I heard it I was intrigued for a multitude of reasons, and I still am.

I think what stands out to me is that although on TFTO there are very long songs (20 min), they are jam packed full of different aspects and running motifs that make it so interesting as a listening experience. It is a very thorough and full record that through long passages reflects on itself and it’s past passages.

TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHIC OCEANS - YES

The themes developed, whether fun and playful or harsh and mysterious, are interesting, and show how diverse Yes’s musicality and creativity is. I think there are also a spiritual aspect to the album… primarily towards the back end of the record.

On the final track Ritual (Nous Sommes De Soleil – We Are The Sun), is not only a traditionally quirky and interesting track like most prog is – like the title, Ritual has some spiritual aspects which make it a satisfying and as well as this provocative ending.

I think while mentioning provocative, we have to understand how interesting and provoking this record is, with musical tones such as soaring sounds like the pedal steel guitar we hear, or the harsh stabs that pierce the beauty and really throw us around. This record has a lot of different sounds – which makes sense, given that the album is 4 epics in around 120 minutes.

Overall, this record is an interesting record that I loved to listen to, and I think any prog or experimental fans would enjoy, and in general most music fans.

Stephen O’Malley – But remember what you have had Album Review

Today on Logan Sounds Off I am sharing an album review of ‘But remember what you have had’ by Stephen O’Malley. Stephen O’Malley is an American musician who is also a member of the famous drone metal/experimental duo sunn o))).

Dissonance and assonance…

Stephen O’Malley is an outstanding artist, because his experimentation in the fields of drone as well as avant-garde music is something to behold. This stands true on his latest studio album ‘But remember what you have had’ as this album is a fantastic listen. Stephen establishes dissonance and assonance, and weaves them together spectacularly.

I found this album to be a particularly interesting listen, because as pieces go, it is quite long at a monolithic (by some standards) 34 minutes, however as an ‘album’ experience, this is a short yet thorough performance, that is dense and easy to explore – which is really cool.

As someone who has recently been intrigued by not only Stephen’s work as a solo musician, but as a musician as a whole, I am very interested in this album, because it both showcases Stephen’s drone metal sound like when playing with the group sunn o))) (Stephen and Greg Anderson) as well as different aspects of his creativity showcased on music like the new single from his upcoming studio album.

Although this is a long song, I feel like it is an amazing listen, as it develops into many different parts, such as the deep ambience at the opening moments of Side A, to the darkness and sheen to the final notes, that although absent of echo, do echo in your mind.

I can’t describe any emotions regarding this album, as it is so diverse, however I will say this album goes between warmth and harshness, as well as beauty and confusion. It is a really strange but approachable piece that I think does need to be listened to by music fans, as we can learn a lot from Stephen’s amazing skill of capturing the precise moment to either let the drone churn, or to throw us another curve ball.

Nomeansno – Wrong Album Review

Reviewing the Alternative Tentacles repress of Nomeansno’s Wrong on Logan Sounds Off!

Today I am excited to be sharing my review of the album Wrong. It has recently gotten a repress over at AT, so I was very happy to be bought (by my Dad) Wrong, on standard black vinyl in Spindizzy Records. I also came home to an email telling me Sex Mad was getting a repress, so I was very happy about that too!

In all it’s glory…

The cool vinyl package comes with a digital download code and a lyric sheet. I loved being able to look at this incredible album in the flesh, and get my teeth into the absolute grime of some of it!

The album sounds amazing and is iconic, but it was even better on vinyl, especially for someone who is such a massive fan of Nomeansno and AT.

Well done to AT for getting this repress out!

My first introduction to Nomeansno was some of the tracks of The People’s Choice comp, and then I didn’t listen to them for a couple of years. I rediscovered them while on holidays in Fermanagh by that same comp, and I discovered the approaching repress (at the time) on the AT website for Wrong.

From there it has been a bit of a journey, but I now have in my possession this incredible album, and hopefully I will be able to pick up Sex Mad too. I haven’t heard much of that album (as it isn’t officially on streaming) yet, but soon it shall!

Coming soon to AT!

I love the song Revenge of the album, and that B-side sold out pretty quick, so unfortunately I won’t have that on wax till Sex Mad comes to the EU (as AT doesn’t have a Europe retailer). In this episode of Logan Sounds Off, I talk about the vinyl package, as well as the music and my overall thoughts.

Johnny Cash – “At Folsom Prison” Album Review

In this episode of Logan Sounds Off, I am reviewing “At Folsom Prison” by Johnny Cash. My Dad bought this vinyl for me at The Record Rack.

In this album review, I discuss the tracklist of the album, and the impact or story of each track. I also mention Johnny Cash’s features with June Carter, who is an amazing singer.

I found it amazing to listen to such a raw and creatively recorded album, it is magnificent.

I review “You’re Weird Now” by Guerilla Toss on my music podcast Logan Sounds Off.

Guerilla Toss – You’re Weird Now Album Review

Today I am ecstatic to be sharing an album review of the latest studio album “You’re Weird Now” by Gilded ALM. I received this blue vinyl copy from Gilded ALM, so thanks to Gilded ALM for sending this vinyl on to me! It’s a really cool pressing – and I love the colourway! As a vinyl nerd, I have to say this record looks amazing in person, and it suits the record: a weird colour for a weird album (I say affectionately)!

Guerilla Toss – “You’re Weird Now” album cover

I didn’t know about the album “You’re Weird Now” or the band Guerilla Toss until I received this vinyl, so I didn’t know what music I was getting into! It was exciting to be delighted by a new band on my first listen. The album was a handful, especially if you are a new fan. It grew on me though!

Guerilla Toss – “You’re Weird Now” tracklist

First off the bat – you will be weird after you listen to this – in the best way possible. This album is so quirky, cool and strange – in the best way possible. With songs like “Life’s A Zoo” (adequatly titled) and “Psychosis Is Just A Number”, we can really sense the funky electronic vibes on this album, along with many other genres – it’s giving so many different genres at once it is insane! Again, more proof that “You’re Weird Now” is unapologetically weird. I think that is one of the coolest types of music that can be put out – music that is just personal and of course, fun.

Guerilla Toss – “You’re Weird Now” blue vinyl

Guerilla Toss ticks a lot of the boxes for me. Although it may not be for everyone, it is for me. I strongly recommend this album to anyone who wants to listen to something light-hearted, fun and interesting. I am excited to hear what Guerilla Toss do in the future.

Today I am excited to be sharing my review of “End Of The Middle” by Richard Dawson.

Rich(ard) Dawson – End Of The Middle Album Review

In this review, I delve into my favourite parts of this album. For me personally, I really enjoy it for multiple reasons; it’s tone, sound as well as musicianship. That may encompass everything on the album, yes, but individually I think they are all so different in so many ways.

Richard Dawson - End Of The Middle album review
One of the coolest (and simplest) LP packages!

For example, Richard has a tone that I think most people don’t. He is creative, inspired and always tries to sound like himself, which seems to me, effortlessly. This brutal honesty, perhaps? really works well on this album, because of it’s homely feel. Like on songs like Gondola – referencing TV shows! A Place In The Sun, Cash In The Attic… genius.

As well as this, we find humourous lyrics, that aren’t ment to be. For example? Bolt. “Dad’s in the bathtub, singing”. Things like that make this album feel so real. More than real. Just like the song “More than real”, where it describes such incredible, unfathomable things, that apply not only to family situations (or more generations, to be correct while regarding this album), but to modern life, in most, if not all situations.

Richard Dawson
Rich Dawson

I think what really impacts me regarding Dawson, is his openness. His ability to make difficult experiences (e.g. Bullies, The question), into beautiful, meaningful aspects of life to be embraced – like on Bullies – a bullied kid grows up to have a kid who gets involves in scraps. The final lyric? “I know you have, a good heart”. Woah. What an impactful statement. Rich is a master of not only the language, but also the sound of this magnificent, imperfect, homely, sad, happy, moody, optimistic album. It’s a lot. I hope you like it.

Check his music out live when he comes to Ireland! (link down below, as of November 2025)

Today on my podcast Logan Sounds Off, I am very excited to review the debut album by Lifeguard: “Ripped And Torn”.

Hailing from Chicago, Lifeguard’s new album is a bold cut; filled with emotion, vibrancy and above all – pure passion. This album is a magnificent work of art, not only because it artistically is something that can be admired, but can also serve another purpose, being provocative.

I think that Lifeguard are such an interesting band to listen to, and are amazing to get inspired from too!

Chumbawamba – Slap!

Today on my podcast Logan Sounds Off, I am going to be reviewing the alternative rock album “Slap!” by Chumbawamba.

Chumbawamba – Slap! Album Review

Today I am going to be reviewing on of my favourite records in my collection: Slap! by Chumbawamba.

This is an incredible record, for multiple different reasons. I think for me as a younger listener, when I was first introduced to it, I was shocked by the stunning musicianship, and really great expressive moments across the record. As a newbie to experimental music, sampling, a big band and such, this was super new to me, and really, just a bit of a blast of new information that I loved.

Not only was the music inspiring on this album, but the abrasive lyricism, about political moments and figures was very impactful on me, especially as someone who is a massive political punk fan.

This brought me to discover new movements both in music and politics. Unlike most albums, this album has remained interesting and new the entire time I have been listening to it. This is a true feat.

By Schorle – Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=20215774

Honestly, Slap! is a very underated album. I would love to spread the amazing message that this record brings. This albums really just makes alternative and political music so easy to get into, with amazing stretched across this album that makes it sound great, and so fun to listen to, even though there are some very politically infused moments that reference horrific moments and/or figures and their actions, and their actions’ consequences.

This overall is one of the best records I have ever heard. I would strongly recommend you check it out, and love it just as much as I do, for it is a dynamic masterpiece that expresses artistic creativity, as well as pure human emotion.

Lankum – Live In Dublin Album Review

I review Live In Dublin by Lankum on Logan Sounds Off. Live In Dublin is an incredible and stunning album of both vibrancy of colour, that is not only exceptional in the experimental, but also in the factor of being accessible.

Lankum – Live In Dublin Album Review

In this episode of Logan Sounds Off, I am reviewing “Live In Dublin” by Lankum; an incredible live album that is stunning in both musicianship and emotion.

This is a fantastic release that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to, for many different reasons. One that I do think deserves attention is the fact that, as a Lankum fan, I got to discover different insights into these songs, and the live sound that accompanies them, and how this rawness can make the emotion more real, especially when it is recorded with such zeal, such as on this record, with references to stepping behind the curtain, as well as panto chants from both the crowd and the band. That is what makes it a magical experience.

Along with that, this is even more apparent if it’s noticed that in less that a brief time before the release of this album, we explored through another Lankum album – False Lankum. This was a double album that explored many different types of musicianship, tones, genres as well as overall emotions. This being recognised in the studio as well as live allows the listener to thoroughly enjoy the songs even more by hearing some of the vocals in a more open setting instead of a studio. In now way am I diminishing studio albums, I am merely expressing how having live releases between studio albums can compliment the live shows as well as the original album.

Overall, as a fan and a reviewer, this album ticked all the boxes.

Declan O’ Rourke – Kyabram With Kisses XX Album Review

In this episode of Logan Sounds Off, I am reviewing “Kyabram With Kisses XX” by Declan O’ Rourke. This was released for Record Store Day 2025, and contains demos as well as studio dialogue and more from Declan’s album “Since Kyabram”.

Reviewing "Kyabram With Kisses XX" by Declan O' Rourke, released for Record Store Day 2025
Loop Fans

It was really cool to be given a copy of this new Record Store Day pressing by Anthem Vinyl, the new Irish pressing plant, which pressed this record.

I had the pleasure of being given a tour of the new premises, and how the vinyl pressing process worked. I always had a vague idea, but to see the plant in person was very cool. It was amazing to be able to listen to an album that I had seen where it had been pressed.

In this review I discuss the different aspects of this album and how it contrasts to the original record – Since Kyabram. Does the studio dialogue add more context? Yes. Do the demos give you more insight into the original tracks? Obviously! Are the covers necessary? Without a doubt. The covers add more aspects to the album, whether it’s Paul Weller’s magnificent cover of Galileo, or whether it is Imelda May adding her own vibrancy to the amazing “Love Is The Way”. The demos compliment the tracks, and give way more context and insight into the songwriting process. Speaking of context, the studio dialogue allows us to hear between the grooves. What was happening in the room like when Declan commenting on the track.

Declan O’ Rourke

For someone who is new to Declan’s music, this album got me into Since Kyabram, and both albums compliment each other perfectly. Thank you to Anthem Vinyl, Declan O’ Rourke, Paul Weller, Imelda May as well as all the other incredible people who made this album happen!

Shabaka – Percieve Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace Album Review

This vinyl was gifted to me by Gary Kehoe, at Rollercoaster Records who has appeared as a guest on Logan Sounds Off before. Before receiving the album, I didn’t know the music of Shabaka but I was stunned by the incredible work that was created on this record.

Shabaka

This album sounds organic, vast, and overall has a depth to it that is unmatched by most other albums, especially jazz. I speak about that depth here, as well as some of my favourite tracks.

As a big fan of jazz music, especially experimental, I loved to hear this amazing album, as Shabaka and his guests on this album craft some of the best songs I have ever heard my life, and that is not just in the genre of jazz.

The outlook that is expressed on this album on amazing topics is both objective, as well as expressive. This may sound like a dense album to get into, but the beauty of this record is that it is so accesible, while at the same time maintaining the rare feature of being multidimensional.

This record is amazing, and I would strongly recommend that you pick it up on vinyl, because it sounds amazing on a speaker. I felt enveloped and wrapped in a tone created on this record. I think that in itself proves how amazing this album is.

Shabaka

I say this is a great album, but not in the normal sense. This really struck a chord that I haven’t explored before in jazz. The rawness is what adds to this track, the amazing simplicity, and yet complexity that us, as listeners find in this album.

Today, on Logan Sounds Off, I am sharing an thoughts on the album viagr aboys by Viagra Boys. I delve into the entire track list as well as sharing my experience seeing Viagra Boys live!

viagr aboys Album Review

Today on Logan Sounds Off, I am reviewing one of my favourite albums of the year so far, “viagr aboys” by Viagra Boys!

I got to see Viagra Boys live, and they were amazing! I got to meet the band before the show, and they were very kind, and they gave me a copy of the album, signed and personalised!

I have been a big fan of Viagra Boys since Joshua Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age recommended me their music in my interview with him in 2023!

Since then I have been discovering their music, with iconic tracks such as “Sports” and “Slow Learner” off their debut LP Street Worms, to Amy Taylor of Amyl & The Sniffers featuring on a John Prine cover called “In Spite Of Ourselves” on their second album “Welfare Jazz”, and their highly conceptual, avant-garde and brilliant third album “Cave World”, which I also reviewed here (links down below!) on Logan Sounds Off.

I was very impressed with the incredible lyricism and fun sounds of the opening single “Man Made Of Meat”, the simplicity of “Uno II” and the explosivity of “The Bog Body”, so I was very excited to hear the album!

Thanks to Viagra Boys for giving a copy of the album!

Prefab Sprout – From Langley Park To Memphis Album Review

Prefab Sprout are well known for the unique sound and amazing approach to making music, and so I picked out for this weeks album review; From Langley Park To Memphis by Prefab Sprout.

This is an iconic album, starting off with some mind blowing songs, including The King Of Rock ‘N’ Roll, which was my gateway into their discography. Since then, songs such as “When Love Breaks Down” have become some of my favourite songs.

It is hard to deny the impact that Prefab Sprout have had on the music community, and even though they are known as pop, there is something much more experimental about Prefab Sprout than a lot of past pop groups.

Neil Young – After The Gold Rush

In this album review, I discuss the many themes that Neil Young discovers and thoroughly explores in his third studio album After The Gold Rush, a rock masterpiece that delves into both melancholic and hopeful tones.

The Pogues – Rum, Sodomy & The Lash

Rum, Sodomy & the Lash is one of my favourite albums. It is dynamic in it’s multitudes of stories and morals, and Rum Sodomy & The Lash has some of the best musicians to ever step into the recording studio.

Produced by the iconic Elvis Costello, this album takes a new form in this modern age, as at the moment, trad music is becoming particularly popular in this day and age.

I always love listening to this album, and recenly I got to see The Pogues live in December playing with many guests, some of which I interviewed (which are linked below!) and the concert was amazing. I even got to see a couple of songs of this album live!

The Police – Zenyatta Mondatta Album Review

Today I am excited to share the latest album review on Logan Sounds Off, Zenyatta Mondatta by The Police.

IMDb

This album is not only iconic in it’s unique style of musicianship, album cover and lyricism, but this album is inspirational in many ways, including it’s intense fast paced tracks, such as “Canary In A Coalmine”, or very strange and experimental tracks such as “When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What’s Still Around”.

In this episode, I discuss my favourite points on the album, lyricism, dynamics, my favourite tracks as well as so much more. If you are knew to this album, I also have a guide for those new to the album, and where to start diving in.

I loved listening to this amazing indie album by Porridge Radio. It was really cool, and was so dynamic, with it being indie and alternative, as well as transitioning between multiple textures, such as warmth, vulnerability and a brutal rawness that is just unheard in other albums.

On this album you are greeted with some amazing and subtle drums that are constantly providing a beautiful texture to the album throughout the album, trumpets and trombones to make you smile, powerful saxophones that combine them all together, to match Basie‘s incredible piano skills.

Overall, April In Paris while being an exciting listen, it is also a relaxing masterpiece that shows the brilliance of Count Basie and his Orchestra subtly, while giving us a beautiful album. This album… is amazing. Not just musically, but as a piece of art, it is quite cool that this is a thing. The five tracks on this album (one of them a whopping 22 minutes…) are stuck together with beautiful electronic glue, that binds this piece of art together.

Weezer – The Blue Album

Listen and Subscribe:
Apple Podcasts | Spotify | RSS

The Blue Album is not only a crucial point in the discography of the incredible and iconic band Weezer, but also in rock music. Still influencing and spreading to different groups of music fans, this album now 30 years old is still growing.

I originally was introduced to Weezer via a format most Weezer fans bought and were familiar with, as well as being top of the line at the time; the compact disc.

Gifted to me by my uncle Eamonm, I began to discover more of the distorted and incredible loud guitars, dominant bass and destructive drums, which all blended together into eleven tracks, like Buddy Holly, Undone – The Sweater Song, Surf Wax America and my personal favourite track on the album, In The Garage.

This album being loved by fellow musicians, rockers and fans, Weezer’s Blue Album is a brilliant and iconic collection of rock classics, distortion, and much more. Along with being a classic though, this album is also confusing, as it is titled officially Weezer, along with 5 other studio with the same name.

This album does not dissapoint as it has it’s classics such as Take Five, to other incredible tracks such as Kathy’s Waltz.

With amazing musicians accompanying Dave Brubeck who played the piano on this album including Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright and Paul Morello.

I really enjoyed listening to and reviewing this album, as it is very versatile in the fact that songs like Blue Rondo A La Turk can go from very intense instrumental stabs to playful piano.
